North American Contractors Case Studies: Improper Roofing Components Impact on a Home in Cloverdale,IN

Challenge
We received a referral from a previous client to help a friend of theirs who was experiencing mold growth in their attic. Upon arrival the homeowner told inspector Josh that the roof had been replaced about 5 years ago by a local contractor. They started noticing a heavy mold smell in their home and was able to pinpoint the location of the smell. It appeared to be coming from their attic. The contractor that had installed the roofing system in the years prior, had installed ridge vents that were not adequate for this home. Thus resulting in poor ventilation and mold growth all over the attic walls. Also, the shingles they used on the roof replacement were not available locally and would result in a hefty shipping charge from a retailer out of state.
Solution
Inspector Josh recommended to replace all of the ridge vents with adequate ones for the roofing system. We were able to find a shingle from a local retailer that was a close enough match to the existing ones, without the homeowner having to pay the shipping charge. A local mold remediation company was recommended to the homeowner to properly and safely remove the mold in the attic.
