Can Squirrels Cause Roof Damage?

Spring is just around the corner and soon the squirrels will be out frolicking in joy. While they are pretty cute and fun to watch, it’s not always fun and games when if comes to these cute critters and your roof. In fact, if you see squirrels running around on your roof, you might have reasons to be concerned.

Can Squirrels Cause Roof Damage?

Squirrels Can Cause Roof Damage & More

The squirrels don’t have sharp teeth and claws just for opening nuts and climbing trees. They’re also known for gnawing and scratching at rooftops. Did you know that these little rodents can chew their way through your roof shingles, destroy your decking and underlayment and make new little nests inside your attic? I bet you are rethinking how cute squirrels are!

Many homeowners do experience rodents, including squirrels, in their attics. Once a squirrel makes its way in there, they are known to chew away at the insulations, chew through wires and worse, settling in and building nests!

Let’s talk about what to do if you suspect squirrels have made a home in your attic

Start by checking your roof and exterior walls for holes that squirrels could use to enter your home. It only takes a hole about an inch wide for them to move in. If it’s a tight fit, they’ll chew away the edges to make the hole is bigger! Next, inspect your attic and look for signs of rodent life. You may notice gnaw or claw marks, torn or missing insulation, shredded paper or urine or feces. Once you are positive there are no critters inside, seal any potential entry holes and cracks.

If your roof is in need of replacement, of course, NAC will make sure everything is sealed up properly during the new roof installation.

Tips to stop squirrels from coming back to your roof

If you are concerned about the possible damage these fuzzy little critters have made to your roof, contact us for a FREE roof inspection. If there is possible damage, you won’t want to delay because destruction caused by squirrels can lead to roof leaks and problems with the decking and underlying support system.

As far as trying to keep them from damaging your roof, unfortunately, as long as they have access, they are likely to keep causing issues. Simply trimming nearby trees and branches will help solve the problem. But keep in mind that squirrels are incredible jumpers. Prune any branches that are within 10 feet of your home to effectively prevent them from leaping onto the roof.

Another suggestion is to eleminate bird feeders. Bird feeders attract squirrels and other rodents because it’s an easy source of food. And once they come for the free food, they are likely to look around for shelter and more food.

Call in an expert

Old roofs are easy targets for squirrel invasions, but more importantly failing roof systems will allow the elements to penetrate as well. If a creature the size of a squirrel can find a way into your attic, so can rain, sleet, snow or ice! If you have had any issues with rodents getting into your attic, it might be time to talk with NAC about the condition of your roof. Contact us at (317) 787-5211 for a free inspection
