Home Exterior Project for This Spring

Spring is here! The weather is finally getting warmer, the sun is out, flowers are blooming, and you can now start your spring cleaning. Spring can bring a variety of outdoor projects that will help your homes curb appeal, and most importantly, the longevity of your home.

Roof:
Inspect your roof from the ground. Some areas of concern can be seen without ever climbing on your roof. You may notice loose or missing shingles, which would need to be addressed immediately to prevent leaks. You may even look around your downspouts. If you notice a large amount of shingle granules being washed away from the rain, your roof could be damaged and should be inspected by a professional.

Siding:
Walk around your home to check for any potential issues lingering from the winter months. Keep an eye out for missing or loose pieces, as well as dents from hail damage. If you do notice any issues, contact your local contractor to inspect your exterior. Especially with hail, they will be able to walk you through the options if your insurance company needs to be involved.

Windows:
Part of your spring cleaning should include cleaning your windows. We know this isn’t the fun part, but your home will look amazing and think of all the sunshine that will be coming through! When you are cleaning, make sure you open and close each window to make sure they are working properly. Other areas of concern you might come across are moisture within the pane, your windows won’t stay open or you may notice a draft coming through. If you experience any concerns, you may need to repair, or possibly replace your windows.

Gutters:
Your gutters are a crucial accessory to your roofing system. Their primary function is to funnel water off the roof and away from the home. Too much water falling too close to your home can erode the soil around it, compromising the foundation. And if you have a basement, you know all too well the damage water can cause. Additionally, water dripping off your roof can find its way into your home if it can’t drain properly. If your gutters are clogged with leaves or debris, your gutters will not function correctly, causing the rain water to pool and not drain properly. Cleaning your gutters is not an easy task and can be very time consuming. This might be one project you may want to talk to your local contractor to help with.

Chimney:
When working on the roof, we see a lot of repairs with chimney flashing. The flashing is sheet metal that is installed for ensuring the connection between the chimney and roof is watertight. Overtime, the effectiveness of the flashing can weaken. If not maintained or installed properly, you are bound to have an issue with roof leaks. If you have a contractor inspect your roof, and you have a chimney, make sure he is checking the chimney flashing.
