An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof. It can damage your roof and the interior of your home, as well as your gutters and downspouts.
HOW DO THEY FORM?
Ice dams form when the roof over the attic gets warm enough to melt the layer of snow. The water begins to trickle down between the layer of snow and the shingles until it reaches the eave of the roof. This area stays cold because it extends beyond the side of the house causing the water to re-freeze.
(The flatter the pitch of the roof, the easier it is for an ice dam to form.)
PREVENTING ICE DAMS
BE PROACTIVE! There are steps that can be taken to help prevent future ice dams. Remember, ice dams are primarily caused by poor insulation and ventilation in the space under the roof.
WHAT CAN I DO IF I SEE SIGNS OF AN ICE DAM?
First and foremost, you need to have the ice dam removed immediately. Please do not try to break the ice with a hammer or other tool as you can cause more damage. Allow a professional, to come out and address the situation safely. Our main goal is to remedy the situation before it causes additional damage.
